The OnTheBus application has been designed following the 7 principles of universal design. This kind of design has been used in order to obtain a fully accessible and non-discriminatory application to be used by a maximum number of people.

Users who want to use this application can be very diverse, and therefore may have some type of functional limitation, so the application has been designed keeping in mind these groups.

In addition, we have worked with them to ensure that the resulting application is fully accessible. In order to customize it for these users, the first time the application is run, the desired accessibility profile has to be selected.

		Visual functional limitation. Colour blindness. Low degree of vision. Blindness.
		Cognitive functional limitation.
		Hearing functional limitation.
		Mobility functional limitation.

 

Features of the application

• Default high-contrast themes to properly display the application interface.

• Customizing application elements:
  • Change of the colour of the background.
  • Change of the text colour.
  • Change of the background colour of the buttons and their text.

• Data entry mode in the application:
  • Keyboard: using Android's on-screen keyboard.
  • Map: selecting a position by tapping a location on the map.
  • Gestures: enter text drawing symbols with the finger on the screen.
  • Speech Recognition: capture of information through voice analysis.
    

• Additional information:
  • Sounds for users with visual functional limitations.
  • Vibration for users with visual and/or hearing functional limitations.
  • Visual for users with hearing functional limitations.
  • Information extension at each step for users with cognitive functional limitation.
    
    
• Special features for reduced mobility users:
  • Search for accessible bus routes.
  • Application buttons sized large enough for all users.

 

Multi-language

Aside from the functional limitations, it has also been taken into account that in order to cover more users it is necessary that the application is in the user's language.

So at present the application is in 4 languages, both in the written and the verbalized environment.
